Newsflash! Due to COVID19, we're waving deposits for a limited time!

Calling all quarantined families...

Are you feeling a little helpless when it comes to your son's screen time right now? Are you worried about the negative effects quarantine might have on his development? We're hoping you aren't feeling guilty about it - these are unprecedented times! We're here to help your son emerge from quarantine and continue developing, the way you had intended him to before COVID19!

US teens spend an average of more than seven hours per day on screen media for entertainment, and tweens spend nearly five hours, and that doesn't include time spent using screens for school.

But first, here's what we know about the effects of quarantine on developing minds:

Because most of a child's social development occurs outside of their family and friend groups, being quarantined dramatically decreases  their opportunities for new experiences and self-discovery, which is crucial at adolescent ages in particular.

According to the EPA, the average american (kids + adults) spends 93% of their life indoors. (That's only half of a day per week spent outside) While studies show that spending time in nature has significant and wide-ranging health benefits

Average post-traumatic stress scores are four times higher in children who have been quarantined than in those who have not.

Social distancing is expected to most negatively impact kids who are in late childhood through adolescence. (Ages 8-18)

We have a solution for all the findings listed above - we have for over 50 years! Are you ready?

What if there was a way your son could safely:

AND without any financial commitment upfront...

Spend two to four weeks without electronic screens

Get back to socializing with kids in his age group

Spend every day outside, at the foot of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Decompress from the stressors of COVID19

...Then keep on reading

At Birchwood Wilderness Camp, we always nurture a technology-free + social atmosphere set against the backdrop of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

BUT, for the first time ever, we've decided to wave deposits for a limited time.

Why? We want you to start making plans for the future again.

We know that everything could change at the drop of a hat.

Summer camps everywhere could cancel the entire summer. Or, campers could flood dining halls in celebration of our quarantine ending, seeking recovery from isolation.

None of us know yet.

But, here at Birchwood, we don't go down without a fight! This isn't the first (and won't be the last) storm we've weathered with our campers.

For over 50 years it has been our mission to create and foster outdoor experiences for boys (ages 7-17).

We believe in connection, self-discovery, and a sense of shared purpose through wilderness adventure. We keep our enrollment small by design (max capacity of 46 campers per session) so we can foster our philosophy.

We are still making plans for our July and August camp sessions {with additional health measures} and we want you to feel safe, physically and financially, making those plans too!

We're making this a possibility for you this July and August!

So, here's our offer to you

 JUly 13 - August 9    |    $5,400

 A Four Week Session

Zero financial commitment or cancellation penalty until June 28th.

This is a limited time offer. Enroll before June 5th to claim your risk-free enrollment.

After June 28th, a $1,000 deposit is due. Full tuition balance is due by the start of your son's session. If camp is not permitted to operate by state and/or federal authorities, and therefore cancelled, you will receive a full refund. If camp is permitted to operate July 13 - August 9, but at the last minute you are not comfortable sending your son, your deposit will be applied to summer 2021.

Want to know more about Birchwood, first?

-Stacey, Camp Mom

"This was the single most life-changing experience my son has ever had, in so many ways."

-Sara, Camp Mom

"As parents, we want to give our kids tools to be successful adults. Independence is one tool that cannot be taught while holding their hand. Birchwood is where my son has learned not only independence, but confidence in new situations, with new people, hard work from not wanting to let his fellow campers down, and a love for animals and nature. Although I missed him every second, I knew he was safe, having fun, and growing in ways I could have never imagined, and he was doing it in one of the most beautiful, pristine places in the world!"

-Amy, Camp Mom

"This camp is truly an amazing place! We just signed our son up for his third summer. He made it very clear in the letters he wrote home last summer that he wanted to attend the 4 week session this year. While at camp they have an opportunity to truly be themselves. They get to explore and be outside. They make valuable friendships.  He has grown so much in his independence, confidence and belief in himself because of his experiences from Birchwood. We are already counting down the days till next summer."

When your son isn't in camp, he's on a wilderness trip.

We've witnessed campers leave for Birchwood wilderness trips as boys and come back as young men, changed by the path of the paddle. Over half a century, we've perfected the trips we offer in order to deliver these outdoor experiences to our campers! Click on each photo to learn more about the trips we offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about the Birchwood staff? How do I know it's safe for my child to interact with his counselors?

What about other campers? Will there be any sort of testing?

Our staff will begin arriving at Birchwood June 28th. Once they arrive, they will be at Birchwood the remainder of the summer, which means they will have been properly quarantined at camp and do not pose a risk for exposure.

Our sister camp, Camp Birchwood for Girls, is currently working to obtain enough testing kits to supply both camps, with the idea that campers would be tested upon arrival. We have also cancelled our second two-week session of the summer, meaning that no new campers will be introduced to the camp during your son's session.
