Exploring the Quetico, Crownlands, BWCAW, and Tettegouche

This week have a wide variety of trips! Fishing, Paddling, Rock Climbing! The first trip left on Monday and the fifth trip left this morning (Wednesday). Everybody will return on Friday afternoon to share their tales from the trails but we won’t leave you hanging that long! Keep reading to discover which adventures our Birchwood boys have set out for this week.

Canadian Crownlands Fishing – 5-Day Trip

This trip is led by Birchwood counselors, Frosty (back left), Gatsby (back middle), and Nairo (back right).

This trip is highly coveted for our campers who fancy themselves fishermen. They paddled directly from our docks, up into Lake Saganaga, and into Northern Light Lake, which is the gateway to Moe Lake and Trafalgar Bay. This land is the wild west of wilderness territory and the fishing is somewhat legendary! There are even pictographs to visit in Trafalgar Bay!

North Shore Climbers – 5-Day Trip

This trip is led by co-counselors Flash (back left), Ocho (far right), and Duke (front middle).

A Birchwood favorite, the North Shore Climbing Trip is unlike any other trip! This group is in for 5 days of climbing the sheer cliffs that stand directly over Lake Superior, which boasts world-renowned climbing. Not only will they be climbing incredible rocks, they’ll also get to eat some incredible camp meals! Since this trip is car camping based, they have more space to pack cast iron pots and big bags of groceries. We can’t wait to hear all about their climbs and their meals when they get back.

Quetico Seniors – 5-Day Trip

This group is guided by Senior Leadership Director, Nacho (right), and his Senior Leadership Campers – Mason (left), Hugh (second from left), Charlie (middle), and Shea (second from right).

Our Senior Leadership Campers were given the privilege and responsibility of planning their own trip to close out the session and WOW did they choose a good one! They planned a 5-day paddling adventure into the Canadian Quetico, which is Canada’s version of the BWCA. They left directly from our docks, paddled into Lake Sagnaga, and into Cache Bay where they visited the ranger station and pictographs. They’ll get to see Silver Falls and explore the beautiful Quetico, which was closed up until last summer due to the pandemic. We haven’t sent a trip to the Quetico since 2019 and boy does it feel great to send our Senior Leaders there!

Eddie Falls Chain – 4-Day Trip

This trip is led by co-counselors Ghost (back right) and Hero (back left).

This trip plans to explore the chain of waterfalls along this route! These are not the kind of waterfalls you send canoes down….they’re the kind of gentle waterfalls that you climb through and sit under, getting a nice back massage and soaking in the pools! To say we’re envious would be an understatement!

Lizz and Swamp Paddle – 3-Day Trip

This group is guided by Hemi (left), Veto (second from right), and Remy (right).

Don’t let this group fool you – they may be few in numbers but they are abundant in spirit! The BWCA entry point for this trip is called the Lizz and Swamp entry point but don’t let that name fool you either, this entry point is the gateway to the quintessential canoe country with its long narrow lakes and plentiful wildlife!

As our campers set their sights on adventure, let us wish them warm nights and perhaps a glimpse of the northern lights! In every walk or paddle with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

Happy Trails,

Ashley, Director
